Price rarely settles it: for a car going from Rudkøbing to Nakskov the ferry is simply the short way, while the bridge is a detour of some forty kilometres.

Unlike several other Molslinjen routes, there are ticket machines right at the ferry berth here, so you can drive to the harbour and buy on the spot. That does not mean you should: on busy summer weekends the deciding factor is space on the car deck, not the ticket. Booking online or in the app locks the space in. The app also shows the expected driving time to the harbour, so you can see which departure you can realistically make.

PayZapp needs a Danish setup

The operator’s number-plate payment lets you drive straight aboard without booking, billing against the registration. For anyone crossing regularly between Langeland and Lolland it is the easiest option, as are the ten-trip cards and Bizz agreements. For a visitor on holiday the setup effort rarely pays off — an ordinary online booking is the simpler route.

Dogs and cats are welcome on board in the marked animal areas, dogs on a short lead, and dogs may go out on the open sun deck. Other animals must stay in a carrier. You may leave a pet in the car, but be aware that the car deck is not accessible while under way, so you cannot go down to check. Animals are not allowed in the bistro area.

The standard ticket covers the whole car

The standard ticket costs DKK 312 and applies to a low car under 1.95 m high and under 6 m long — including up to nine people. That is a different logic from the international routes, where fares are often charged per person. Travelling four or five up, the cost per head is low. Fifteen minutes — and that covers almost everyone

Check-in must be completed fifteen minutes before departure. That applies to cars, motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles and foot passengers, and equally to motorhomes, cars with trailers, groups, coaches and articulated lorries. Only special transports get thirty minutes. Foot passengers who need help boarding should phone the operator at least 48 hours ahead and be at the harbour thirty minutes before departure.

Weekends start later and finish earlier

On weekdays the ferry runs 05:15 to 22:15. Saturdays it does not start until 06:15 and stops already at 21:15; Sundays it begins at 07:15 and runs to 22:15. If you want an early start on a Saturday morning or a late run home on a Saturday night, those are precisely the sailings that do not exist. Worth checking before you fix a weekend plan.

Both harbours have parking

At Spodsbjerg the parking is by the shipping office on Spodsbjergvej, directly opposite the ferry berth, with both short and long stay. At Tårs it is by the service centre at Spodsbjergvej 20. That is useful if you want to leave the car on one side and cross on foot — a foot passenger ticket costs considerably less than taking the vehicle.

The route is worked by the sister ships M/F Langeland and M/F Lolland, built by Sietas in Germany. They are 99.9 m long, make 16 knots and take 122 cars and 591 passengers. A lift runs from the car deck up to the saloon deck, and there is an aft saloon, a bistro and a sun deck on top. Maximum clearance height is 4.4 m, which covers most motorhomes.

With a car, motorhome or bicycle

The shortcut between Funen and Lolland-Falster

This is above all a practical link rather than an experience in itself — but it saves time. From southern Funen and Langeland towards Lolland-Falster and on to southern Zealand, the Langeland Belt is the short way, while the Great Belt route is a substantial detour north. Langeland itself is quiet cycling country with short distances and light traffic.

Getting to the ferry berth at Spodsbjerg

  1. Address – Ny Spodsbjergvej 339B, 5900 Rudkøbing. The berth is on the east coast of Langeland, about ten minutes’ drive from Rudkøbing.
  2. By car – Route 305 straight across Langeland to Spodsbjerg. From Svendborg you cross Tåsinge and the Langeland Bridge, then head east.
  3. Parking – By the shipping office on Spodsbjergvej, directly opposite the ferry berth; short and long stay both available.
