Ferry or Öresund Bridge?

Without a car, the ferry is the only way across. With one, it is usually the cheaper option – and the only one that comes with a sea view and a coffee break.

Two countries in one day – no car needed

This is Europe's easiest international day trip: train from Copenhagen, ferry across the strait, lunch in Sweden – and Hamlet's castle on the way.

Coast at the Öresund

The classic Copenhagen day trip

Take the train from Copenhagen to Elsinore (approx. 45 minutes), walk 10 minutes to the terminal and hop on the next ferry – there's one every 20 minutes. By lunchtime you're strolling through Helsingborg's old town in Sweden.

Ferry at the harbour entrance

Hamlet's castle at the pier

Kronborg Castle – the Elsinore of Shakespeare's Hamlet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – stands within sight of the Elsinore ferry berth. The best view of it? From the ferry deck, halfway across the strait.

Ferry on the Øresund

Electric across the strait

The ferries Aurora and Tycho Brahe run on batteries, cutting CO₂ by around 65% – one of Europe's greenest ferry routes. On board: a panorama lounge, café and duty-free shop.

A living tradition on the strait

People have been crossing between Elsinore and Helsingborg for over a thousand years – and the locals have made an art of it.

Ferry wake on the Öresund

"Tura" – the round trip you never leave

Locals ride back and forth without disembarking: coffee, prawn sandwiches, duty-free shopping and the view. With the cheap 1-day ticket, the round trip becomes a mini cruise – a beloved Scandinavian ritual.

Rocky coast in morning light

Gateway to the Swedish west coast

Drivers heading for Gothenburg or Stockholm roll straight from the terminal onto the E6 or E4 – skipping Malmö and the bridge toll. For destinations north of Skåne, the ferry is often the faster road.

Ferry at the berth

Around the clock, all year

Up to 55 sailings a day, with night ferries at least hourly, 365 days a year. Whenever you show up, the next crossing is minutes away.

Insider tips for this route

How to make Scandinavia's shortest international ferry even cheaper and smoother.

Book Low Price online, skip the terminal fare

Booked online in advance, a car crosses from about €27 – bought at check-in, the same trip can cost more than double. Low Price tickets are valid ± 1 hour around your chosen sailing, which is almost always enough at this frequency.

Do the "tura" round trip

The same-day return ticket is heavily discounted – and nobody makes you get off in Helsingborg. Coffee, sea view and duty-free are half the point.

Important: pets are not allowed

Unlike most Baltic ferries, dogs and cats are currently not permitted on this route (assistance dogs excepted). Travelling with a pet? Take the Öresund Bridge, where your dog simply stays in the car, or a direct ferry from Germany.

Combine train + ferry for a car-free trip

Copenhagen–Elsinore by train takes about 45 minutes; on the Swedish side, Helsingborg C station is a 5-minute walk from the terminal. The classic Scandinavian two-country trip, no rental car required.

Over 65? Check the senior fare

Öresundslinjen is one of the few operators with a dedicated 65+ fare. It is not applied automatically – select the right ticket type when booking.

Standard tickets only if your timing is unclear

The pricier Standard ticket gives ± 8 hours of flexibility and free refunds. With a sailing every 20 minutes, most travellers do fine with Low Price.

Travelling with a dog? Re-plan this leg

Pets are currently not allowed on the Elsinore–Helsingborg ferry – only assistance dogs may board. If you are crossing between Denmark and Sweden with a pet, there are good alternatives.

  • Öresund Bridge: your dog simply stays in the car
  • Direct ferries from Germany, e.g. Travemünde–Trelleborg with pet cabins
  • For entry to Sweden: EU pet passport, microchip & rabies vaccination
  • Assistance dogs are welcome on the HH ferry

Getting to the terminal

  1. Getting to Elsinore – By car via the E47/Elsinore motorway, following the "Færge/Ferry" signs – about 45 minutes from Copenhagen. By train to Elsinore St., then a 10-minute walk.
  2. Check in at the Elsinore terminal – Automatic lanes, check-in until 10 minutes before departure. Foot passengers walk straight through the terminal building and on board.
  3. Board and cast off – Barely parked and you are under way: 20 minutes is just enough for a coffee in the panorama lounge or a duty-free stop.
  4. Arrive in Helsingborg – straight from the terminal onto the E4 (Stockholm) or E6 (Gothenburg); on foot you reach Helsingborg C station and the old town in 5 minutes.
