Two things decide how this travel day goes: the right harbour address and the check-in deadline.

Rønne has three addresses – you need the right one

Foot passengers go to the customer centre at Dampskibskajen 5. Anyone driving to Ystad checks in at Sverigesvej 1; anyone heading for Køge or Sassnitz at Tysklandsvej. All three belong to the same harbour but sit at different gates, and a satnav will take you precisely where you send it. Put the right address into your phone before you set off, not while queuing.

Check-in closes ten minutes before departure

For the Ystad line Bornholmslinjen sets a hard limit of ten minutes before departure, fifteen for Køge and twenty for Sassnitz. That sounds generous, but it is not: the deadline is for completed check-in, not for arriving at the port. Anyone with a charging reservation for an electric vehicle, travelling with a disability or needing help boarding has to be there thirty minutes ahead.

The ferry terminal adjoins Ystad railway station on Hamntorget. Skånetrafiken’s Pågatåg trains take about 45 minutes to Malmö from there and continue the other way towards Simrishamn. That is why the route works well without a car – unlike most Baltic crossings, there is no hunt for a bus or a taxi at the arrival port.

The day trip works in both directions

Leave Rønne at 06:30 and you are in Ystad at 07:50 with a return as late as 22:30 – a good fourteen hours in Skåne. The other way round, the 08:30 from Ystad puts you in Rønne at 09:50 with returns until 20:30. In both cases the bottleneck is the last evening sailing, not the first one in the morning.

Four sailings in winter, eight in summer

Bornholmslinjen adds a second fast ferry in the high season between June and September. That is exactly why our August archive shows eight departures on some days and only four on others. If you are planning outside the season, do not assume the summer timetable: with four sailings a day, the return leg has to be right.

The fare depends on the day, not the hour

Across our 68 price figures from Rønne the range ran from €7 to €70 per person. The low values sat almost entirely on midweek sailings and at the edges of the day, early morning and late evening; the high ones on weekends. If you can move your travel day, that saves more than picking a different departure time.

With a vehicle, book early rather than arrive early

Vehicle spaces on a fast ferry are limited and go early during the Swedish and Danish summer holidays. Turning up at the port early does not help; booking early does. Give the length and height of your vehicle correctly when booking – roof boxes and rear carriers count.

Taking your own vehicle to Bornholm

Bornholm is an island built for cycling: a dense network of signed routes, many of them following the trackbeds of the island’s closed railways. If you bring your own bike, book it like a vehicle. For motorhomes the usual Baltic rule applies – length decides the price.

Getting to the ferry terminal in Rønne

  1. Pick the address that matches how you travel – On foot: Dampskibskajen 5, 3700 Rønne. By vehicle to Ystad: Sverigesvej 1, 3700 Rønne. Both gates belong to the same harbour but are not next to each other.
  2. Getting there – The harbour sits on the edge of Rønne’s old town, a few minutes on foot from the centre. Bornholm Airport is about five kilometres away.
  3. Check-in – Through the operator’s app, at a machine or at the desk. The customer centre on Dampskibskajen opens daily at 05:30 and stays staffed until the last ferry has left.
