This is the only ferry that links mainland Germany directly with Bornholm — no detour through Sweden, no Øresund Bridge, no second border crossing. Three hours twenty minutes from the Mukran ferry port near Sassnitz, and that figure held for every single one of the fifty sailings in our archive. Two things are worth knowing before you plan around it: the line does not run all year, and the terminal in Sassnitz is unstaffed.

Timetable Sassnitz – Rønne

The timetable on this line is short and, in return, dependable. Sassnitz departure is 11:50, arriving Rønne 15:10; on Saturdays a second sailing leaves at 14:30 and arrives 17:50. Coming back, Rønne departs 08:00 arriving 11:20, with an extra Saturday sailing at 10:00 arriving 13:20. No other departure times appear anywhere in our archive. What changes across the season is not the clock but the calendar: in August the line ran daily except Tuesdays, in September Thursday to Monday, from late September Friday and Monday dropped out, and by October only Thursday, Saturday and Sunday remained. Three things set this line apart from every other Baltic ferry — and none of them is where you would look for it.

Sassnitz is an unstaffed port

This is the single most important sentence on the page. Bornholmslinjen states in its conditions of carriage that in Sassnitz neither cash payment nor ticket purchase at the check-in machines is possible. There is no staffed desk where a problem can be sorted out on the spot. Turn up without a booking and you will not travel. Board without a valid ticket and the conditions provide for a control fee of DKK 750. So: book online in advance and have the confirmation on your phone before you drive onto the island of Rügen.

The line does not run in winter

The last sailing in our archive is 18 October 2026. Every daily query after that returns no sailings at all, while the Ystad line keeps running on 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 October — both come from the same source, so the difference is the line, not the data. That matches the operator's own season table, in which the shoulder season ends on 18 October and the low season begins on 19 October. For 2027 we can say nothing: our timetable source does not yet hold that year, not even for the year-round Ystad line. If you are travelling to Bornholm in winter, use Ystad or Køge.

Twenty minutes to check in — thirty for some

For the Sassnitz line Bornholmslinjen sets the deadline at twenty minutes before departure, noticeably more than the ten minutes on the Ystad line. That means check-in completed, not arrival at the port. The deadline moves to thirty minutes for electric cars with a charging slot reserved on board, for disabled-adapted vehicles, for foot passengers entitled to assistance, and for lorries and road trains. There is no baggage service at Sassnitz or at Rønne — you carry your own luggage.

Five things that regularly go wrong on this route.

Two kinds of price that cannot be compared

Almost everyone gets this wrong. For the Sassnitz line Bornholmslinjen advertises tickets from DKK 699 (Lowprice), DKK 999 (Flex) and DKK 2,599 (Standard), as of 24 Aug 2026 — those are vehicle tickets including up to five people, valid for cars up to 1.95 m high. The figures you see on comparison sites, and in our own archive, are per-person fares instead: €21 to €70 per person from Sassnitz. Compare one against the other and the answer will be wrong. Decide first whether you are travelling with a car or on foot; that determines which price applies to you at all.

The day of the week matters more than the time

There are effectively only two departure times on this line, but which days it sails changes as the season goes on. In August, Tuesday was the only blank day; by October only Thursday, Saturday and Sunday were left. If you are planning a week on the island, check the outbound and the return together before you book accommodation — otherwise the arrival fits and the departure falls two days short.

PayZapp will not help a foreign number plate

The operator's number-plate payment, which lets you drive straight aboard without a prior booking, can only be set up for Danish and Swedish vehicles under its terms. For a German, Dutch or Polish plate it is not an option. Combined with the unstaffed port, that means booking online in advance is not the more convenient route on this line — it is the only one.

Keep your ID within reach

Bornholmslinjen itself points out that the authorities carry out regular checks on travellers to and from Bornholm, and asks passengers to carry a passport or identity card. That applies regardless of both countries being inside the Schengen area. Keep the document in the glovebox, not in a suitcase in the boot.

The ship is not guaranteed

Bornholmslinjen lists three vessels: the fast ferry Express 1 plus Hammershus and Povl Anker. Its terms expressly reserve the right to operate a sailing with another suitable ship, and state that details of vessel type are not binding. If you are counting on a particular ship for a cabin, a restaurant or deck space, confirm it with the operator before you book.

Taking your own vehicle to Bornholm

For anyone driving up through Germany this is the argument for the line: your car ends the crossing in Rønne without having driven the length of Denmark and Sweden and paid the Øresund Bridge on the way. Bornholm itself is an island built for cycling — a dense network of signed routes, much of it laid on the trackbeds of the closed island railways.

  • Give vehicle length and height correctly when booking; the published ticket prices apply to cars up to 1.95 m high
  • A roof box or rear carrier counts towards height and length respectively
  • Bicycles need their own space and must be booked; check-in deadline is also twenty minutes
  • Electric car with a charging slot reserved on board: check in thirty minutes before departure
  • Denmark maintains a list of banned dog breeds — check it before booking if you travel with a dog

Getting to the ferry port at Sassnitz

  1. Address – Im Fährhafen 20, 18546 Sassnitz. This is Mukran ferry port south-east of the town, not the old town harbour of Sassnitz — a distinction your satnav will only make if you give it the full address.
  2. By car – Take the B96 onto the island of Rügen and follow signs towards Sassnitz; the approach to the ferry port is signposted from Bergen auf Rügen. From Berlin or Hamburg the drive usually takes around three hours.
  3. Without a car – Train to Sassnitz, then bus to Mukran ferry port — the station is not at the terminal. Foot passengers and cyclists use a separate approach, which the operator sets out on its own site.
  4. Check-in – Book online first. Sassnitz is unstaffed: no cash, no ticket sales at the machines. Check-in must be completed twenty minutes before departure, or thirty for a reserved charging slot, a disabled-adapted vehicle, assistance or a lorry.
